Orin could not smell the toffee apples in the office any more. Anya’s blood and scent dampened down all the other aromas, disguising them completely. Angus was unreachable on his phone and no messages had been left, either. Conrad had been with his walker all night and Orin had little hope of seeing him any time soon, but he couldn’t get angry. Shifters waited, hoped and dreamed about their own walkers and once they were found it was something very special. So why wasn’t he up in arms and dashing off to be the hero for Angus, supposedly his spirit walker? He knew why and he hated the fact life had kept them separate yet in the same company for so long. If he’d have meet Angus when he had joined the pack he and Bryant would never have happened. But they had and Orin was certain he loved him, so how could he reconcile this with Angus. He couldn’t. Orin shivered as he heard the door open to Conrad’s room.
Anya, dressed in what must be Conrad’s T-shirt and jogging pants, appeared from the doorway. He stood and smiled not sure how to introduce himself, females made him nervous as he never really understood them and tended to treat them like a totally different species.
“Hello, you are Orin are you not?” Anya said smiling warmly at him. Thankful this was not going to be awkward he returned the smile.
“Yes I am, miss.”
Anya laughed, “After last night I do not think I can count myself as a miss anymore.” Orin could feel the blush rise up his cheeks.
“Erm, sorry.”
“No, no please that was my fault. I should be more discreet, but with what I have done over the years, one forgets,” Anya’s tone was wistful, but the smile still remained. “Still, I have my spirit walker now and I think our pasts are forgivable for both of us so I will work on my discretion.”
Orin had no idea what Anya was going on about and to be honest he didn’t really care. He had enough to deal with already. “You’re fine, I just have a lot to go through and sort out.”
“Ah yes, Conrad said I needed to pass on to you some information.” Anya paused and looked at him intently.
“Yes,” he said confused at her intent stare.
“You seem to have fire in your eyes,” Anya replied.
“Oh,” Orin said, thinking his eyes had looked perfectly normal in front of the mirror this morning. “Must be the light, what is the information?”
“Humm, your friend Angus the wolf shifter is with the vultures,” Anya spat the word vultures and Orin’s heart sank just a little. “They bought my stones and me from the humans.”
Orin’s jaw dropped. Shifters were still being sold, shit. Orin knew about Matt and his friend Joe being sold, but in his own naive way he hoped it was the exception and not the rule. Vultures were never to be trusted. Orin pushed that thought to the back of his mind.
